A couple of things to help with your player.

If you have carpet in the house, have your player walk around in skates on the carpet.  The better balance will help on the ice, plus getting used to the skates.  The better they can walk in skates, the easier it will be on the slippery stuff.  Tie the skates leaving the top hole empty as it will promote better balance.

There is also equipment available at the rink for parents who need some, as Minor Hockey has some sets of equipment.
